Cone Rod Assembly
Description
The cone-rod provides the driving force for pushing the cone into the soil,
while transferring the power and data between the cone and the electronics
pod. A general arrangement drawing can be found on the following page.
The cone rod is a nominal 21.5m long stainless steel tube with a nominal
outside diameter of 19.05mm and an internal diameter of 12.85mm. A
coupling unit is fixed at the lower end for attaching the Cone. The tube is non
magnetic and it is this difference between the cone rod and the magnetic cone
coupling that enables the system to detect the position of the cone.
The cone rod is pre-coiled to a nominal 1-metre diameter for shipping and
ease of loading onto the cassettes. The fixed end of the cone rod has a
stainless steel termination block fitted with an 8 pin male bulkhead Subconn.
The termination block is secured to the thruster cassette to transfer the
driving force. The cone end of the rod terminates with a cone coupling
assembly that fastens on to the cone via a crossover coupling and provides a
watertight connection via o-ring seals. Internal wires in the cone rod are
terminated in a mating pair of 6 pin stepped Lemo connectors. The lemo
connector within the rod is sealed into a stainless steel housing which can e be
gently pulled clear in order to make the connection.
The movement is limited to about 40mm; so take care when
pulling on the connector

Assembly
There is no exploded view of the cone-rod, as there are no user serviceable
parts used. Any damage to the cone-rod requires complete replacement.
