13.
Cooling system component removal:
coolant pipes and hoses
NOTE:
The procedure described in this section
is for the removal of both coolant pipes. The
pipes may be removed individually: simply omit
the steps pertaining to the pipe that is not being
removed. The removal of both pipes is covered
as a single procedure because of the order in
which the pipes are drained, which is significant
if both pipes are to be replaced.
NOTE:
The primary reason for removing one or
both coolant pipes would be to replace them in
the event of damage or corrosion. In that case,
match-marking the removed pipes is not neces-
sary, but the replacement pipes should be
match-marked before they are cut.
13a. Lift and support the vehicle as described
in the Introduction chapter of this manual.
13b. Tilt-up the driver’s seat and disconnect the
battery ground cable from the negative
post on the battery.
13c. Remove the splash shield and drain the
coolant from the return pipe as described
in the Draining and Filling section of this
chapter. See Figure 8.84.
13d. From underneath the front of the vehicle,
match-mark the to-radiator pipe and hose
(inboard pipe).
13e. Place a catch-pan under the match-
marked joint, and disconnect the pipe
from the hose. Loosen the hose clamp
using a 5/16” driver. See Figure 8.85.
NOTE:
As an alternative to draining the front
part of the cooling system, a pair of commercially
available radiator hose clamps can be used on
the front radiator hoses to keep fluid in the sys-
tem. Because of the high connection points to
the engine, relatively little fluid will be lost from
the rear of the system.
13f. Remove the radiator cap to allow the
remainder of the coolant in the front of the
system to drain.
13g. Remove the screws that hold the coolant
pipes to the front bracket using a 3/8”
wrench. See Figure 8.86.
