Cooling system checking: flow
10a. The presence of coolant flow or the lack of
coolant flow can be detected using a non-
contact thermometer. See Figure 8.75.
10b. If there is no (or insufficient) coolant flow,
inspection of individual parts of the sys-
tem will be necessary to find the source of
the problem. Other than the radiator
cores, if there is a blockage in any part of
the system, the entire system will not flow.
10c. Check the easy and the obvious first:
•
Check for proper tension on the belt that drives
the water pump.
•
Check for crushed coolant pipes
•
Check for collapsed coolant hoses. A collapsed
hose on the return side of the system can indi-
cate a blockage on the to-radiator side of the
system.
10d. If none of the external factors account for
the loss of coolant circulation, there may
be an internal problem with the water
pump impeller or thermostat. If this is the
case, contact the partnering Caterpillar
dealer.

Cooling system component removal:
cooling matrix
NOTE:
Generally, the cooling matrix is most
easily removed as a complete unit, then disas-
sembled on the bench. The cooling fan may be
easily removed individually if it is to be replaced.
11a. Confirm that the key switch is OFF, and
remove the key from the switch.
11b. Open and remove the hood:
•
Tilt the hood forward.
•
Disconnect the hood check cables using a 5/16”
wrench.
•
Remove the hairpin clips that hold the hood
onto the hood support rods.
•
Slide the hood toward the driver’s side of the
vehicle, maneuvering it to clear the front of the
cooling air baffle, and remove it from the vehicle.
11c. Disconnect the fan switch plug, located on
the front bottom edge of the radiator, next
to the front radiator hose.
