Chapter 3 - Drive System: Drive Shafts and Differentials
121
•
Removing shims from the pinion cartridge
reduces back-lash, moves the contact patch
toward the base of the pinion gear and inward on
the radius of the ring gear.
•
Shimming the ring gear closer to the pinion gear
reduces back lash with minimal effect on the
location of the contact patch
•
Shimming the ring gear away from the pinion
gear increases back lash with minimal effect on
the location of the contact patch.
6e. Use Prussian blue dye to confirm the con-
tact patch on each gear. See Figure 3.91.
6f. Rotational back-lash of the pinion shaft
should be between .002”-.010” (0.05-
0.25mm).

Once the back-lash and gear mesh are set correctly,
install the O-ring seals on each of the cartridges. Lubri-
cate the seals with gear lube, and make the final
assembly on the differential.
* Tighten to specified drag
1 Apply a small amount of permanent threadlocking
compound such as Loctite 262 (red).
2 Apply a small amount of re-leasable thread locking
compound such as Loctite 242 (blue).
7.
Operation:
7a. In open operation, the differential allows
the two rear wheels to rotate at different
speeds. This reduces absolute traction
but improves cornering grip.
7b. When the differential lock is engaged, four
pins lock the two halves of the differential
housing together. This improves rear
wheel traction, but hurts cornering grip.
7c. The differential should not be shifted from
open operation to locked operation while
the vehicle is in motion. If one rear wheel
is rotating faster than the other when the
lock pins engage, the pins and their bore
may be damaged.
NOTE:
Differential damage caused by differen-
tial lock engagement with one wheel spinning
faster than the other constitutes customer
abuse, and is not warrantable.
7d. The differential may be shifted from locked
operation into open operation while the
vehicle is in motion. The unlocking action
may not be immediate. If there is a differ-
ence in drive load between the rear
wheels, the pins will be held-in by friction
until the drive load is equalized.
