Assembly notes: Rear differential installation
•
Inspect the splines and shaft seals before install-
ing the rear differential. Make any necessary
repairs before reassembly.
•
Lubricate the Splined joints with a small amount
of anti-seize compound on assembly.
•
Reverse the removal procedure to install the dif-
ferential and half-shaft.
•
Confirm that the drive shaft splines are properly
aligned so that the holes for the tension pin line-
up.
•
Replace any worn hardware or components
before reassembly.
If the self-locking feature of any of the nuts is
degraded, replace the nuts or apply thread lock-
ing compound such as Loctite® 242 (blue) to the
threads.
•
When locating the rear differential, install all of
the hardware that secures the differential and
torque bracket, then go back and tighten it.
•
Check the level of the gear lube in the differen-
tial. Top-up if needed before running the vehicle.
•
Check the adjustment and operation of the dif-
ferential lock.
•
Tighten the hardware to the torques specified in
the accompanying table:

Test-run the vehicle in a safe area before return-
ing it to service.

REAR DIFFERENTIAL
NOTE:
The rear differential will not be repaired
in the field. If there is damage to it, it will be
replaced as a complete unit.
The following section of this chapter is intended
to increase the technician’s understanding of
how the rear differential works. Greater under-
standing will help eliminate mis-diagnosis of dif-
ferential-related service issues.
Disassembly of the differential is not meant to
imply that the technician should disassemble the
differential.
NOTE:
Disassembly of the rear differential used
in the Cub Cadet 4X4 Utility vehicle will void the
warranty.
NOTE:
There are no service parts available
through Cub Cadet for the rear differential used
on the 4X4 Utility Vehicle.
NOTE:
Outside of warranty, the dealer may
choose to service the differential using locally
purchased seals and bearings.
NOTE:
The rear differential is unique in that it is
assembled of three cartridges that fit into the
main case.
1.
Drain the rear differential by turning it on its side
in a drain pan, or by removing the vent and
inverting it in a drain pan. See Figure 3.70.
