1.9 Antenna Options
There are a number of different antennas available for use with the
SBX-3 and Evaluation Module and include:
•
An AM/FM coupler for use with a vehicle antenna
•
A marine style whip antenna for use aboard a vessel or vehicle
•
Two varieties of loop antennas
•
A combined GPS/beacon loop antenna
•
An antenna signal splitter is available for use with the combined
GPS/beacon antenna and separate beacon and GPS receivers.
1.9.1 MBA-3/MBA-3A Electric Field Antenna
This antenna, referred to as an E-field whip antenna, is sensitive to the
electrical field of the radiobeacon broadcast. A band-pass filter and
integral low noise amplifier are contained in the base of the MBA-3,
which together amplify signals in the 283.5 to 325.0 kHz frequency
band.
The MBA-3 is compatible with standard marine threaded mounts (1-14-
UNS), and must be grounded for optimum performance. The MBA-3
antenna is constructed with a nylon base and a fiberglass whip
antenna.
1.9.2 MBL-3 Magnetic Field Antenna
Referred to as an H-field loop antenna, the MBL-3 is sensitive to the
magnetic component of the beacon broadcast. Due to this
characteristic, it is less susceptible to precipitation static (P-static) and
other forms of predominate E-field noise, than a whip antenna.
