modem (modulate-demodulate) - A device that adapts a computer to a tele-
phone line by converting the computer’s digital pulses into audio frequencies for
the telephone when sending. And the reverse when receiving a signal from the
telephone line.
module - Referring to hardware, a module is a self-contained component.
mouse - The most popular pointing device. It was called a mouse because it
more or less resembled one, with the cord being the mouse’s tail.

NiMH battery - Batteries which are common in notebook computers and con-
tain Nickel-Metal Hydride.

parallel port - A socket on a computer used to connect a printer or other paral-
lel device via the computer’s parallel interface.
parallel printer - A printer that receives information from a computer one
character (letter, number, etc.) at a time.
partition - A reserved part of disk or memory that is set aside for some pur-
pose. New hard disks must be partitioned before they can be formatted for the
operating system, this is done with the FDISK utility.
