PIX Device Manager Startup Wizard
>Mail Server Configuration
The PIX Device Manager Startup Wizard>Mail Server Configuration panel allows you to permit people or

Important Notes
When you configure a mail server using PIX Device Manager Startup Wizard, a feature called Mail Guard is
automatically enabled. Mail Guard, also knows as Fixup SMTP, looks into the payload of
SMTP
traffic and
applies the Adaptive Security Algorithm (
ASA
). Fixup SMTP is enabled for port 25 by default, but in the PDM
System Properties tab, you can specify which ports the PIX Firewall listens to for SMTP traffic. Mail Guard
avoids the need for an external mail relay (or bastion host) system.
Iit is acceptable to use the same IP address on the inside interface that is routable on the outside interface.
Field Descriptions
The PIX Device Manager Startup Wizard>Mail Server Configuration panel displays the following fields:
Server's name—Enter the name of the internal server that will provide mail services on your network.
●
Interface on which the server resides—Select the interface on which the mail server resides.
●
Mail Server's Address—Enter the internal IP address of the mail server.
●
External Address—Enter the external IP address of the mail server.
●
Embryonic Connections—The number of embryonic connections allowed to form before the PIX
Firewall begins to deny these connections. Set this limit to prevent attack by a flood of embryonic
connections. An embryonic connection is one that has has been started but has not yet established, such as
a three-way TCP handshake state. Valid values are 0 through 65,535. If this value is set to zero, the number
of connections are unlimited. A positive number enables the
TCP Intercept
feature.
