IGNITION TIMING
377 and 552 Engine Types
If for any reason, ignition ti m ing accuracy is sus-
pected, it can be verified as follows.
VERIFYING MAGNETO FLYWHEEL
TIMING MARK PO
S ITION
Prior to checking the ti m ing, it m ay be necessary
to verify the position of the ti m ing m ark on the
m agneto flywheel, for the following reasons:
• T o detect a m issing or broken m agneto flywheel
W oodruff key which would allow a change of
ti m ing to occur, with eventual breakdown of the
engine.
• T o correctly locate and m ark a ti m ing m ark on a
new service m agneto flywheel.
• T o verify the correct location of the factory ti m -
ing m ark.
• T o detect a wrong m agneto flywheel corre-
sponding to a different engine type.
T o verify the position of the ti m ing m ark on the
m agneto flywheel, proceed as follows:
• Clean the area around the spark plugs, and re-
m ove the m .
• Re m ove the rewind starter fro m the engine.
• Install the T DC gauge in the spark plug hole,
( m agneto/generator side) and adjust as follows:
– Position the m agneto flywheel at approxi-
m ately T DC.

2. Gauge on MAG side cylinder
– Asse m ble the gauge to the adaptor and
tighten the roller lock nut. Do not tighten
the adaptor lock nut.
– Screw the adaptor into the spark plug hole
and tighten to prevent m ove m ent in the plug
hole.
– Position the dial face toward the m ag-
neto/generator. Move the gauge down until
the needle just begins to
m ove, then m ove
down a further 5 or 6 mm (approxi m ately 1/4
in). T ighten adaptor lock nut by hand.
• Locate the piston T DC position as follows:
– Slowly rotate the m agneto flywheel back and
forth across T DC while observing the needle.
Note that the needle stops m oving only as
the piston is changing direction.
– Rotate the dial face so that «0» is in line with
the needle when it stops m oving.
– Again, slowly rotate the m agneto flywheel
back and forth across T DC and adjust the dial
face to «0», until the needle always stops
exactly at «0» before changing direction.
– «0» now indicates exact T DC.
• Verify the position of the ti m ing m ark on the
m agneto flywheel as follows:
