IGNITION TIMING

required. It has been set at factory and it should

ain correctly adjusted since every part is fixed
and not adjustable.
T
he only ti
m
e the ignition ti
m
-
ing
m
ight have to be changed would be when re-
m
oving and reinstalling the
m
agneto housing, re-
placing the crankshaft, the
m
agneto flywheel, the
trigger coil or the MPEM or ECM. If the ignition
ti
m
ing is found incorrect, first check for proper
crankshaft align
m
ent.

ing can be checked with either the
engine hot or cold. Also, the ignition ti
m
ing is to
be checked at 3

ing light.
Engine retard ti

ing varies depending on engines/

odels for their first hours of operation.

NOTE:
Between 3000 and 4000 RPM, the spark
advance does not change. So when checking igni-
tion ti

ing at 3

00 RPM, a change in engine speed

00 RPM will not affect the ti

ing

when checked with the ti
m
ing light.

CRIBING A TIMING MARK
• Clean the area around the MAG spark plug, and
re
m
ove it.
• Install the
T
DC gauge in the spark plug hole,
(
m
agneto side) and adjust as follows:
– Position the MAG piston at approxi
m
ately
T
DC.

– Asse

ble the gauge to the adaptor and
tighten the roller lock nut. Do not tighten
the adaptor lock nut.
– Screw the adaptor into the spark plug hole
and tighten to prevent
m
ove
m
ent in the plug
hole.
– Position the dial face toward the P
T
O. Move
the gauge down until the needle just begins
to
m
ove, then
m
ove down a further
5
or 6
mm
(approxi
m
ately 1/4 in).
T
ighten adaptor
lock nut by hand.
• Locate the piston
T
DC position as follows:
– Slowly rotate the drive pulley back and forth
across
T
DC while observing the needle.
Note that the needle stops
m
oving only as
the piston is changing direction.
– Rotate the dial face so that «0» is in line with
the needle when it stops
m
oving.
– Again, slowly rotate the drive pulley back and
forth across
T
DC and adjust the dial face to
«0», until the needle always stops exactly at
«0» before changing direction.
– «0» now indicates exact
T
DC.
• Rotate the drive pulley clockwise, one-quarter
turn then carefully rotate it counterclockwise
until the needle indicates the specified
m
ea-
sure
m
ent, indicated in
T

wist a wire as shown and use it as a pointer.
Install the wire on upper starter bolt.
