If readings are acceptable, go on to next step.
If readings are inadequate, individually check each
switch as follows.
Ig n itio n S witch (if so equipped)
Disconnect switch housing. Using a m ulti m eter,
check between MAG and GRD ter m inals if the cir-
cuit is open (0.L M ) in operating position and if
the circuit is closed (0
) in off position.
DE SS S witch
All M odels
Check using a m ulti m eter by connecting probes
to BLAC K /GREEN and BLAC K / W HI T E wires. T he
m ulti m eter should indicate a closed circuit (0 ) in
operating position and a open circuit (0.L M ) in
off position.
If readings do not correspond to the above m en-
tioned indications, replace switch.
If none of these verifications are conclusive, the
proble
m finds its source in the m ain wiring har-
ness. Proceed as follows:

Unplug switch block connected to m ain wiring har-
ness. Check using a m ulti m eter by connecting
probes to appropriate wires. Refer to correspond-
ing ignition and electrical syste
m testing table in
this subsection. T he m ulti m eter should indicate
an open circuit (0.L M ) in operating position and
a close circuit (0
) in off position.
NOTE: For the next step, no switch m ust be con-
nected to the m ain wiring harness.
Disconnect all switches fro m the m ain wiring har-
ness and check the continuity of each wire by con-
necting probes to the end of wires of the sa
m e
color. Repeat with all other wires. It is i m por-
tant to m ention that all wires of the sa m e color
within a given harness are connected together.
T hese wires should therefore have a closed cir-
cuit. On the other hand, BLAC K and BLAC K /YEL-
LO W wires m ust have an open circuit (0.L M ).
Repair or replace if necessary.

Resista n ce Testi n g
– Disconnect housing between the m agneto and
the MPEM.
– Connect m ulti m eter probes to appropriate
wires and m easure resistance. Refer to corre-
sponding IGNI T ION and ELEC T RICAL SYS T EM
T ES T ING table in this subsection.

– Co m pare readings with those appearing in the
IGNI T ION table.
Voltage Testi n g
W hen m anually starting the engine while the spark
plug is installed, the engine will tend to accelerate
beyond the co
m pression point. T his will result in
higher m agneto output power.
– Disconnect housing between the m agneto and
the MPEM.
– Connect m ulti m eter probes to appropriate
wires. Refer to corresponding ignition and
electrical syste m testing table in this subsec-
tion. Bring the selector switch to V and the
scale to 00.0 Vac.
