Using Lookup Functions
Lookup functions create a table within a spreadsheet that acts like a
database. You can enter values in the table and then extract information
from the table dependingon your specifications.
The index entries must be sorted in ascendingorder. For HLOOKUP, the
index is the first row in the selection. For VLOOKUP, the index is the first
column. You select HLOOKUP and VLOOKUP functions from the
Information box in the Insert Function dialogbox. The Insert Function
dialogbox is found by selectingthe Insert Function command from the
Formula menu.
Lookup tables are good for discounts, tax rates, and commission
percentages. The multiplication table below is an example of a simple
lookup table.
HLOOKUP(B1, B3:F4, 1) = 10%.
In this example, the HLOOKUP function returns the value in the second
row of the fourth column in the range B3:F4.
You can extract values horizontally (from rows) with HLOOKUP and
vertically (from columns) with VLOOKUP.
Using Information and Print Functions
The information functions return information about a cell or range of
cells. For example, COUNT counts the number of items in a list.
The printfunctions return the name of the current file, the current page,
and the number of pages. For example, PAGE returns the current page
number and can be used in headers and footers for numberingpages.
