Gear Reduction Unit (If Equipped)
6:1 Gear Reduction Unit
1. See Figure 134. Use your index finger to manually
rotate the gear case bearing (
A
) and gear case cover
bearing (
B
) in both directions. Verify that bearings
rotate freely without roughness, sticking, or unusual
noise.
2. If bearing and/or oil seal (
C
) replacement is required,
proceed as follows:
A. Remove and discard old bearings and oil seal.
B. Feel bearing journals for smoothness. Use fine
steel wool or crocus cloth to remove any burrs or
minor imperfections.
C. Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to bearing
journals and outside diameter of
new
bearings.
D. With the manufacturer's identification facing in,
press on outer race of each bearing until contact
is made with counterbore.
E. Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to oil seal
bore and outside diameter of
new
oil seal.
F. With the open (lip garter spring) side facing in,
press on outside edge of oil seal until flush with
gear case cover.
3. Verify that PTO bearing oil seal in the crankcase
cover is installed with the open (lip garter spring) side
facing out.
4. Orient gear case as noted before removal.
NOTE:
Gear case is installed in the 3 o'clock, 9
o'clock, or 12 o'clock positions.
5. Insert two hex flange screws (
D
) through top holes in
gear case (
E
).
6. Place
new
gasket (
F
) onto installed screws, so that
the sealing bead faces the crankcase cover.
7. Slide gear case over crankshaft and hand tighten
screws into crankcase cover.
8. Insert two remaining hex flange screws through
bottom holes in gear case and hand tighten.
9. Alternately tighten screws to
175-225 lb-in
(19.8-25.4
N-m) using the sequence shown in A of Figure 134.
10. Lubricate o-ring seal (
G
) with clean engine oil and
install into groove in gear case.
11. Align gear teeth and slide drive shaft
assembly (
H
) into gear case bearing.
12. Slide gear case cover (
I
) over drive shaft assembly.
13. Install four hex flange screws (
J
) to fasten gear case
cover to gear case. Alternately tighten screws to
175-225 lb-in
(19.8-25.4 N-m) using the sequence
shown in B of Figure 134.
134
NOTE:
Always orient gear case cover, so that the oil
fill/vent plug hole is at the top.
14. Install oil drain plug with sealing washer (
K
) at bottom
of gear case cover. Tighten plug to
180-210 lb-in
(20.3-23.7 N-m).
15. Place engine on a flat, level surface.
16. Remove oil fill/vent plug (
L
) and oil level plug (
M
) with
sealing washers, if installed.
17. Slowly pour approximately
4 ounces
(118 ml) of the
appropriate oil into the oil fill hole until oil begins to
run out of the oil level hole.
• Use SAE 80W-90 above 40° F (10° C)
• Use SAE 10W-30 below 40° F (10° C)
18. Install oil level plug with sealing washer. Install oil
fill/vent plug with special
copper
sealing washer.
Tighten each plug to
180-210 lb-in
(20.3-23.7 N-m).
