Non Integrated 2:1 Gear Reduction Unit
1. Use your index finger to manually rotate the PTO
shaft bearings in both directions. Verify that bearings
rotate freely without roughness, sticking, or unusual
noise. Replace the PTO shaft/bearing assembly if
necessary.
2. If oil seal replacement is required, proceed as follows:
A. Remove and discard oil seal.
B. Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to oil seal
bore and outside diameter of
new
oil seal.
C. With the open (lip garter spring) side facing
in, press on outside edge of oil seal until flush
with clutch cover.
3. Verify that PTO bearing oil seal in the crankcase
cover is installed with the open (lip garter spring) side
facing out.
4. See Figure 136. Place
new
gasket (
A
) against
crankcase cover flange.
5. Install four hex screws with lock washers (
B
) to
fasten clutch housing (
C
) to crankcase cover.
Alternately tighten screws to
110-130 lb-in
(12.45-14.7 N-m) using the sequence shown in inset
6. Install spacer (
D
) onto crankshaft.
7. Install key (
E
) into crankshaft keyway. Verify that
spacer spins freely and does not contact the clutch
housing.
8. Assemble clutch (
F
), chain (
G
), and PTO shaft/
bearing assembly (
H
). Install clutch aligning keyway
with crankshaft key.
9. Verify the following conditions:
• Clutch is fully seated against the crankshaft
spacer, and spacer spins freely without making
contact with the clutch housing.
• Crankshaft key fully engages the top centrifugal
clutch plate as shown in inset D1 of Figure 136.
• Inside bearing on the PTO shaft is fully seated in
the clutch housing bore.
NOTE:
If clutch becomes disassembled, verify the
following conditions:
• Parts are oriented and stacked correctly as
shown at bottom of Figure 136.
• All friction disks are installed on the sprocket
shaft splines.
• Keyway on the sprocket shaft is aligned with the
keyway on the top centrifugal clutch plate as
shown in insets D1 and D2 of Figure 136.
10. Install crankshaft screw (
I
) and lock washer (
J
) onto
crankshaft and tighten to
180-216 lb-in
(20.35-24.4
N-m).
NOTE:
Rotate PTO shaft by hand to verify that parts
spin freely without binding or sticking. If the PTO shaft
cannot be spun by hand, remove crankshaft bolt and
reassemble clutch.
11. Install two locating pins (
K
) into holes in clutch
housing flange.
12. Place
new
gasket (
L
) onto locating pins.
13. Using the same holes in which the locating pins
were installed, start two 2 inch screws (
M
) to
fasten clutch cover (
N
) to clutch housing. Start
the seven 2-1/4 screws (
O
) in the remaining
holes. Alternately tighten screws to
96-120 lb-in
(10.85-13.55 N-m) using the sequence shown in inset
14. Spin the output shaft by hand to verify that parts
move freely without binding or sticking.
15. Install oil drain plug (
P
) with copper sealing washer
(
Q
) and tighten to
140-200 lb-in
(15.8-22.6 N-m).
16. Slowly pour
10.7 ounces
(316 ml) of SAE 30W oil
into the oil fill hole.
17. Wait a few seconds to allow oil to settle.
18. Insert dipstick (
R
) into the oil fill hole, so that it is
resting on the threads.
NOTE:
The most accurate oil level readings are
obtained when the engine is cold.
19. Slowly remove dipstick.
20. Verify that the oil level is at or near the high mark on
the dipstick. See inset C of Figure 136.
NOTE:
Observe oil level on both sides of the dipstick.
The lower level of the two readings is the correct oil
level measurement.
21. Add oil as necessary until oil level is correct.
