FITTING THE PISTON RINGS
Each piston of the engine is fitted with
three rings: a top compression ring (1) of
a trapezoidal cross-section, second
compression ring of a tapered-face and
one oil-scraper ring (3) of a box-type
with a spring expander. The
compression tapered-face ring (2) has a
marking “top” on its end-face surface
near the piston-ring joint; it should face
upwards to the piston crown when fitted.
The oil-scraper expander joint should
not coincide with the ring joint.
Locate the ring joints equidistant around
the circumference.
FITTING THE TIMING GEARS
The timing gears should be fitted in accordance with the marks thereon. Make the
lettering on the intermediate gear (3) coincident with the corresponding marks on pinion
(6) of the crankshaft and pinion (2) of the camshaft as well as with that on the gear (4)
of the fuel pump drive, as shown in the figure on the right.
