SECTION 7: VENTING
7.1 Ventin g
This heater m u st b e vented in accordance w ith the
r u les contained in this man u al and w ith the follo w ing
national codes and any state, provincial or local
codes
w hich may apply:
United States:

Any portion of vent pipe passing thro u gh a
com bu sti b le w all m u st have a listed thim b le to
conform w ith the a b ove codes.
The heater may b e installed u nvented in
certain circ u mstances according to bu ilding
ventilation codes. Refer to the a b ove codes and
Page 12, Section 7.3 for f u rther information.
Unvented operation also req u ires compliance w ith
the clearances to com bu sti b les given on Page 7,
Figure 4 .
The b ottom of the vent or air intake terminal shall not
b e located less than 1' (.3 m) a b ove grade level.
The vent shall not terminate less than 7' (2.1 m)
a
b ove grade w here located adjacent to p ub lic
w alk w ays.
Vent terminal m u st b e installed at a height s u fficient
to prevent b lockage b y sno w and bu ilding materials
protected from degradation b y fl u e gasses.
Vent terminal m u st b e b eyond any com bu sti b le
overhang.

For single w all venting, press u re sensitive al u min u m
tape or silicone sealant m u st b e u sed to seal all
joints.
Al u min u m tape shall have a minim u m temperat u re
rating of 400° F (204° C) and meet SMACNA AFTS-
100-73 standards. High temperat u re silicone
sealant m u st have a minim u m temperat u re rating of
480° F (250° C).
7.1.1 United States Re q uirements
Vent m u st terminate at least 3' (.9 m) a b ove any
forced air inlet located w ithin 10' (3.1 m).
Vent m u st terminate at least 4' (1.2 m) b elo w ,
4' (1.2 m) horizontally from, or 1' (.3 m) a b ove any
door, opera b le w indo w , or gravity air inlet into any
bu ilding.

u el Gas Code specifies a 4' (1.2 m) horizontal vent
terminal clearance from gas and electric meters,
reg
u lators and relief eq u ipment.
7.1.2 Canadian Re q uirements
The vent shall not terminate w ithin 6' (1.8 m) of a
mechanical air s u pply inlet to any bu ilding.
The vent shall not terminate w ithin 3' (.9 m) of a
w indo w or door that can b e opened in any bu ilding,
any non-mechanical air s u pply inlet to any bu ilding,
or of the com bu stion air inlet of any other appliance.
7.2 Vent Installation
Maintain clearances to com bu sti b les at all times for
safety. Clearances are the req u ired distances that
com bu sti b le o b jects m u st b e a w ay from the heater
to prevent serio u s fire hazard. See Page 7, Figure 4 .
For vented u nits, the vent m u st terminate o u tside of
the bu ilding.
Vents m u st b e f u lly sealed and correctly sized for
the model. If the vent passes thro u gh a w all or
ceiling of com bu sti b le material, it m u st b e enclosed
b y a listed thim b le and b e separated from the
thim b le b y at least a 2" (5 cm) air gap.
For separated com bu stion models, vents and air
intakes m u st b e a f u lly sealed system and correctly
sized for the model. Vent sho u ld b e assem b led as
detailed on Page 13, Figure 6 through Page 17,
Figure 11 . The joints b et w een the vent terminal and
the roof or w all m u st b e properly sealed. If the vent
passes thro u gh a w all or ceiling of com bu sti b le
material, it m u st b e enclosed b y a listed thim b le and
b e separated from the thim b le b y at least a 2" (5 cm)
air gap.
Vents and air intakes must be ade q uately
supported so that the heater does not bear the
wei
g ht of the pipes.
