SECTION 9: GAS PIPING
A gas meter is connected to the service pipe b y the
gas s u pply company. An existing meter sho u ld b e
checked, prefera b ly b y the company, to ens u re that
the meter is adeq u ate for the rate of gas s u pply
req u ired.
Installation pipes m u st b e fitted in accordance w ith
local and national codes. Pipes of smaller size than
the heater inlet gas connection sho
u ld not b e u sed.
Gas lines m u st meet applica b le codes:
United States: Flexi b le stainless steel gas hose
(US models) is certified per the standard for
connectors for gas appliances, ANSI Z21.21/CSA
6.10 - latest revision.
Canada: R ubb er type 1 gas hose (Canadian
models) is certified as b eing in compliance w ith the
standard for elastomeric composite hose and hose
co
u plings for cond u cting propane and nat u ral gas,
CAN/CGA 8.1 - latest revision.
9.1 Connections
Connect the heater to the gas s u pply ens u ring that
the final connections are as follo w s:
• Gas s u pply pipe w ork is r u n in medi u m or heavy
ga u ge t ub ing in compliance w ith local and
national codes.
• Meter and service m u st b e large eno u gh to
handle all the bu rners b eing installed pl u s any
other connected load. The gas pipe w hich feeds
the system m u st b e large eno u gh to s u pply the
req u ired gas w ith a maxim u m press u re drop of
1/2" w c. When gas piping is not incl u ded in the
layo u t dra w ing, contact the local gas s u pplier.
• An isolating valve and u nion connection sho u ld
b e u sed and fitted into the s u pply adjacent to the
heater.
• A minim u m 1/8" NPT pl u gged tapping
accessi b le for test connection m u st b e installed
immediately u pstream of the gas s u pply
connection to the heater.
• For s u spended heaters, an approved metal
flexi b le connection b et w een the isolating valve
and the heater may b e u sed. To reduce
pressure loss, use one pipe size lar g er than
the heater g as connection.
IMPORTANT - The complete installation m u st b e
p u rged and tested for gas so u ndness in accordance
w ith local and national codes.
Caution: Do not high press u re (in excess of 1/2 psi
[14" w c]) test the gas piping w ith the bu rner
connected. Close man u al sh u t-off valve d u ring any
press u re testing eq u al to less than 1/2 psi (14" w c).
Check the pipe and tubin g ends for leaks before
placin g heatin g e q uipment into service. When
checkin g for g as leaks, use a soap and water
solution; never use an open flame.
WARNING
Explosion Hazard
Leak test all components of gas piping
before operation.
Gas can leak if piping is not installed
properly.
Do not high pressure test gas piping with
heater connected.
Failure to follow these instructions can result
in death, injury or property damage.
