Functional Description 55
NOTES
Backplane PCIe tracking operates only at Gen1 speed. The PCIe switch is Gen2 capable, but
performance is limited to Gen1 to ensure robust operation.
When connecting PCIe fabrics through cables such as those provided for use with the Abaco
OpenVPX starter chassis (SCVPX3U-12), 5 GT/s operation may be possible but
cannot be
guaranteed
. To set up a reliable link when using the development RTMs and cables, users may
need to set the processor card’s PCIe signaling speeds to
2.5 GHz, at least initially. This can be
achieved by forcing the links to GEN1 mode using the PLX set-up menu (see
) in
the BIOS setup utility.
On the PCIe switch, either link can be configured as a non-transparent (NT) port, for
connecting to other intelligent hosts, to provide address translation and mailboxes.
The configuration of these ports can be set by writing to the PCIe Switch
configuration EEPROM by the Operating System. See
information on the PLX PEX8725 PCIe switch.
Associated LEDs show link connection/speed status. See the
information.
5.6.1
PCIe Gen3 Operation
The SBC329 is compatible with PCIe Gen3 operation across the backplane. The
ability to operate at Gen3 depends on the physical parameters of the complete
channel (i.e. the backplane, the SBC329 and the link partner), so Gen3 operation
should be verified on a system-by-system basis.
Abaco has verified Gen3 operation using an SBC329 at each end of the link, in a test
chassis fitted with an Abaco backplane (part number C-ASY000670-001).
5.7 Control Plane Fabric/Gigabit Ethernet
The SBC329 supports a total of three Gigabit Ethernet channels, which collectively
make up the Control Plane interface. The channels are called ETH0, ETH1 and ETH2
from here on. The actual configuration of the Control Plane depends on the build
variant of the SBC329 (described below).
ETH0 is provided by the CM238 PCH, along with an Intel I219LM Ethernet PHY.
The interface supports 10/100/1000BASE-T, auto-negotiation, automatic MDI
crossover and automatic polarity correction.
ETH1 is provided by an Intel I210IT or Intel I1210IS Ethernet Controller device
(depending on the SBC329 variant), and ETH2 is always provided by an Intel I210IS
Ethernet Controller device. In BASE-T mode, ETH1 supports 10/100/1000BASE-T
operation, auto-negotiation and automatic MDI. In BASE-BX mode, the interface
supports link detect and auto-negotiation.
