SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The 3M™ Aircare™ ACU-03/ACU-04 Unit provides high quality air from an
external source of compressed air by removing water droplets, solid
particles and odours. The unit comprises three stages. Stage 1 removes
water droplets and solid particles of 5 microns and above. Stage 2
comprises a coalescing filter which removes particles of 0.01 microns and
above and water and oil aerosols of 0.01 mg/m3 and above. Stage 3
comprises a charcoal adsorber which removes all vapours and odours at
0.003 parts per million and above at 21°C.

WARNINGS AND LIMITATIONS
• Proper selection, training, use and appropriate maintenance are
essential in order for the product to help protect the wearer from
certain airborne contaminants.
• Failure to follow all instructions on the use of this product and/or
failure to wear the respirator system during all times of exposure
may adversely affect the wearer's health, may lead to severe illness
or permanent disability and may render any warranty null and void.
• If you have any doubts about the suitability of the product to your
job situation, it is recommended that you consult an occupational
hygienist, or call 3M OH&ES Technical Affairs at your local 3M
office. See back of this booklet for addresses and telephone
numbers.
• Use this Aircare™ Unit strictly in accordance with all instructions
contained in this booklet.
• Always ensure that:
• the source of air supply is known;
• the purity of the air supply is known;
• the air supply is of a breathable quality, to EN12021.
• Do not use in atmospheres containing less than 19.5% oxygen. (3M
definition. Individual countries may apply their own limits on oxygen
deficiency. Seek advice if in doubt).
• Do not use in environments that are immediately dangerous to life or
health (IDLH).
• Do not use to filter concentrations of toxic dusts and gases.
• Do not use with asphyxiates.
• Do not use outside ambient temperature range of -10°C to +50°C.
• Do not exceed maximum working pressure of 10 bar.
• In case of intended use in explosive atmospheres, contact 3M Technical
Service.
• For use in an ATEX enviroment (Group II Category 2):
• Do not mount the product in an area where impact may occur.
• Supply air quality must be within ISO 8573-1:2010 Class 1.4.2.
• Pulsating pressure and / or a closed circuit can generate heat.
• Deposits of dust on the product must not exceed 5mm thickness.
• The unit must be earthed via the compressed air supply line.
• The unit must not come into contact with liquid solvents, acids or alkalis.
Product cleaning must be undertaken using a method complying with the
specifications of the ATEX zone, preferably by using mild soap and water
or antistatic products.
• Filter Regulators: Do not use Filter Regulators within systems that can
create vibration within the unit.
APPROVALS
This product is supplied by 3M United Kingdom PLC for use with airfed
devices where the supply pressure and flow rates are met by the filtration
unit. The quality of the filtered air meets the requirements of the
International Standard BS ISO 8573-1:2010 Class 6-1. The classes refer
to the size and maximum number of particles per cubic meter and the
maximum concentration of oil. The '-' refers to the water vapour class not
being specified.
EQUIPMENT MARKING
Each Filter stage is marked with the appropriate number.
The direction of airflow is marked with an arrow.
P < 10 Bar denotes maximum working pressure.
-10°C < t < +50°C denotes operating temperature range.
INSTALLATION
Wall Mounted Filtration Unit only – Ensure the wall mounting brackets are
securely attached to the filter unit. Secure filter unit complete with inlet and
outlet fittings to wall.
Wall and Floor Mounted Units - Inlet and outlet couplings must be fitted
prior to initial use. They should be fitted ensuring an airtight seal. Refer to
the arrows on the filter stage for direction of air flow.
Rectus and CEJN couplings, obtained from 3M, should be fitted to the unit
using 3/8" male connector pack supplied.
Connect the filter unit to the air supply and connect the compressed air
supply tube.
^
The Pressure gauge must be fitted ensuring an airtight seal.
The optional anti-tamper lockout kit can be fitted according to Figure 1.
PREPARATION FOR USE
Check apparatus is complete, undamaged and correctly assembled. Any
damaged or defective parts must be replaced with original 3M spare parts
before use.
Check the compressed air supply tubes for damage and that the
connections are leak tight.
Check that the filter bowls are securely fitted into the manifold and that they
are clean and free of collected liquids. Drain the bowls if necessary.
Check that there is no trace of odour in the filtered air. If odour is present,
change the stage 3 filter element (see Maintenance Section).
Carry out an air flow check as described in the User Instructions for the
specific device being supplied with filtered air. It may be necessary to
adjust the regulator on stage 1 of the Aircare Unit. If the differential
pressure indicator on the top of stage 2 indicates red or the required air
flow can not be achieved, replace the stage 2 filter element (see
Maintenance Section).
IN USE
Turn on air supply to unit and regulate pressure to desired level using the
regulator on stage 1.
Leave the contaminated area immediately if:
a) Any part of the system becomes damaged.
b) Airflow into the headtop decreases or stops.
c) Breathing becomes difficult.
d) Dizziness or other distress occurs.
e) You smell or taste contaminants or irritation occurs.
After use, turn regulator on stage 1 fully anti-clockwise to relieve pressure
in the Aircare Unit.
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
Use a clean cloth dampened with a mild solution of water and liquid
household soap.
Do not use petrol, chlorinated degreasing fluids (such as trichloroethylene),
organic solvents or abrasive cleaning agents to clean any part of the
equipment.
MAINTENANCE
Maintenance, servicing and repair must only be carried out by properly
trained personnel.
Use of unapproved parts or unauthorised modification could result in
danger to life or health and can invalidate any warranty.
If disposal of parts is required this should be undertaken in accordance
with local health and safety and environmental regulations.
Filter Element Replacement
Depressurize the unit before removing the filter bowl.
Unscrew the T Bracket connector using a No. 2 screwdriver (Figure 2) and
remove filter stage if necessary.
Remove bowl/filter element assembly (Figure 3).
Remove old filter element and replace (Figure 4).
Draining of Bowls
Stages 1 and 2 are fitted with a combined manual / semi-automatic drain
(supplied in semi-automatic state) which will expel any liquid condensate
when the unit is depressurised (Figure 5).
Stage 3 is fitted with a manual drain, if any liquid should collect at this
stage it can be drained by unscrewing the drain briefly.
