UNI Functional/Protocol Model
User Plane
Transfers data for a user application between the devices.
User
application
refers to a high-level (higher than ATM) data transmission
format such as Ethernet data transmission, Frame Relay data
transmission, or video data transmission. The UNI translates the user
application format to ATM format while ensuring the required quality of
service. LAN Emulation is the primary UNI service operating on the User
Plane in the CoreBuilder 7000 family ATM switch; it transfers Ethernet
frames across ATM devices. See Chapter 7 for details about LAN
Emulation.
Control Plane
Establishes the connections required for a call passing between the two
devices. This includes the signaling procedures for establishing a switched
virtual channel. See Chapter 5 for details about the control plane.
Management Plane
Initializes and maintains a Management Information Base (MIB) residing
in each participating ATM device. The MIB is a management data base
that includes status, control and configuration information and can be
accessed by the User and Control planes and by external network
management systems. The functionality of the Management Plane is
