LANE Version 2.0
167
Multi Protocol over
ATM (MPOA)
The main objective of MPOA is to provide a method of allowing
inter-subnet (or inter-ELAN) communication without requiring that every
packet suffer the latency and delay that can be induced by a layer three
router. The two device types MPS (MPOA Server) and MPC (MPOA Client)
can be configured.
No check on the LANE version is performed since MPOA devices of LANE
version 1.0 (e.g., NetBuilder II) may be attached to the network.
Quality of Service
(QoS)
In LANE 1.0 there is no support for Quality of Service (QoS) features.
Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) service is provided instead. LANE version 2.0
provides locally administered Quality of Service (QoS) for communication
between the LECs. Protocol mechanisms are used to determine whether a
remote end system is likely to support a desired QoS. Each locally defined
QoS can include whether or not a VCC set up with that QoS may be
shared with other protocols or applications. QoS support is done via TLV
in registration and ARP.
For example, each priority level could be assigned to a Constant Bit Rate
(CBR), Variable Bit Rate (VBR), Available Bit Rate (ABR) or Unspecified Bit
Rate (UBR) connection and would define all traffic parameters specific to
each. Therefore, if two LECs on a specific ELAN wanted to fully support
all eight priorities, they would establish eight different VCs between
them, each with a different set of traffic parameters. A particular LEC in
this ELAN can also be configured with a different set of parameters than
the global ELAN default.
New Well-known
LECS Address
In addition to the well-known address already used, an additional address
was created to provide alternate paths to the LECS. If the LECS ATM
address can not be obtained from the ILMI or if the LEC is unable to
establish a Configuration Direct VCC to that address, the well-known
address X”C50079000000000000000000-00A03E000001-00” must be
used to open a configuration VCC to the configuration service. 00A03E is
the ATM Forum assigned OUI and 0000001 has been allocated by the
ATM forum. If the LEC cannot establish a VCC to the WKA (well-known
address) mentioned earlier, the LEC must attempt to establish a VCC to
the second well-known address specified
(X”470079000000000000-00A03E000001-00”).
Local Segment ID
This is used in Token Ring Networks. This 12 bit segment ID of the ELAN
in binary format is only required for LECs that are source routing bridges.
