Presentation
The KA(M)D44P is a in-line 6-cylinder marine diesel engine equipped with an electronic* fuel management system.
It has four valves per cylinder and is equipped with a mechanical compressor and an exhaust-driven turbocharger
with charge air cooler (CAC). A heat exchanger for thermostat controlled freshwater cooling is installed as standard.
The control module for the fuel control system is supplied continuously with information on the current engine speed
(rpm), engine coolant temperature, fuel temperature etc. which enables the fuel pump to supply exactly the correct
amount of fuel at the optimal point in time. The advantage with this system is that it makes the engine quick and
simple to start regardless of the engine coolant temperature (ECT), lower fuel consumption and reduced exhaust
emissions.
The compressor provides air to the engine at low engine speeds and during acceleration, after which the turbo-
charger takes over the supply of air. These units combined, together with the four-valve-per cylinder design, en-
sures a rapid air flow through the engine and an extremely high torque throughout the engine speed range.
The charge air cooler (CAC) cools the input air, thereby increasing oxygen take-up and improving the overall profi-
ciency of combustion in the engine.
The Electronic Diesel Control system (EDC) also includes electronically controlled shifting for more precise and qui-
eter shifting. The propulsion system shifting is performed by an electronic actuator integrated into the system.
* EDC = Electronic Diesel Control.
