Hearing loss from loud noise (from tractors, chain saws, radios, and
other such sources close to the ear) is cumulative over a lifetime without
hope of natural recovery.

Prepare for Operation
◼
First,
read this manual and the Tractor Operator’s manual. Ensure that you understand all
Safety rules and Warnings. Ensure you understand all safety decals on the tractor and the
embankment mower.
◼
Adhere to PPE safety regulations as described in both manuals.
◼
PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO LOUD NOISE MAY CAUSE PERMANENT HEARING LOSS!
Tractors with or without mowers attached can often be noisy enough to cause permanent,
partial hearing loss. We recommend that you wear hearing protection full-time if the noise in
the oper
ator’s position exceeds 80 dB. Noise over 80 dB on a long
-term basis can cause severe
hearing loss. Noise over 90 dB adjacent to the operator over a long-term basis may cause
permanent total hearing loss.
The EMHD is a flail mower. The flails must be sharp to operate appropriately. Dirt, wood, iron,
concrete, stone, rocks, or other foreign materials will shorten the flail's lifetime.
◼
Before operating the flail mower, review the machine checklist. Start the tractor after visually
inspecting the flail mower. Ensure the flail mower is firmly on the ground and that the PTO
shaft is no more than 15 degrees from the centerline.
◼
The flail mower must rest on solid ground before operating. DO NOT operate while raised by
the three-point hitch.
◼
Start the flail mower slowly (idle) with the PTO engaged. Gradually increase engine rpm until
the PTO speed is 540 rpm (not 540 engine rpm). The heavy duty flail mower running speed is
540 rpm. Lower rpm can damage the flail mower if material jams and stops rotation.
You must set up your flail mower before installation. Please follow the steps on the following
pages for a smooth 30-minute setup/assembly.
