NMS
NMS plays the role of manager in the network. It is a system that uses SNMP protocol to
manage/monitor network devices and runs on the NMS server. The NMS can request an Agent
on the device to query or modify one or more specific parameter values. NMS can receive Trap
information actively sent by Agent on the device to learn the current state of the managed
device.
Agent
Agent is an Agent process in the managed device, which is used to maintain the information data
of the managed device and respond to the request from the NMS, and report the management
data to the NMS sending the request. After receiving the request information from the NMS, the
Agent completes the corresponding instructions through the MIB table and responds the
operation result to the NMS. When the device fails or other events occur, the device will send
information to the NMS actively through the Agent and report the current state change of the
device to the NMS.
Management object
Management object refers to the managed object. Each device may contain multiple managed
objects, which may be either a piece of hardware in the device (such as an interface board) or a
collection of hardware, software (such as routing protocols) and their configuration parameters.
MIB
MIB is a database that specifies the variables maintained by the managed device (that is,
information that can be queried and set by the Agent). MIB defines a series of properties of the
managed device in the database: object name, object state, object access limitation and object
data type. Through MIB, the following functions can be completed: Agent can obtain the current
status information of the device by querying MIB. Agent can set the state parameters of the
device by modifying MIB.
