1.0 Overview
Safety in the workplace is an individual and personal responsibility, as well as a management’s
duty. Staff training should be directed towards making safety considerations an attitude of mind
and an integral part of all work procedures.
No one document can ensure safe work practices. Safety in the workplace is dependent upon issues
such as:

The quality of the previous training and experience of the employees.

The testing and labelling of the materials available for use.

The design and maintenance of the physical facilities of the workplace.

The reliability and safety of the equipment provided.
This course is written with the aim of making staff aware of the potential hazards involved within
the workplace and to instil in them the need to think about what they are doing.
Therefore it is essential that all staff be made aware that the use of chemical materials and
equipment in a work environment is potentially hazardous. Staff should take all possible steps to
minimise and guard against accidents; and adopt safe work practices at all times. To assist
Installers with chemical safety in the workplace, it is important that they become totally aware of
the work processes they are performing, and understand the techniques and chemicals they are
using, to minimise the chances of human error.
To assist with this it is important the Installers realise that there is no such thing as a silly question.
If they are not certain of anything to do with the Protectant™ Termite Barrier System or Installation
Process they are to ask questions and obtain clarification or guidance as the need may be.
2.0 Working with Chemicals in the Workplace
Every employee has a responsibility when engaged in the storage or handling of chemical materials
to ensure that the procedures in place, relating to:
a) safe operating procedures
b) housekeeping practices
c) the correct use of personal protective equipment
d) the management of emergencies
are observed to the extent of the employee’s control and abilities.
