Dangerous goods are chemicals or substances specifically listed in the Australian Dangerous
Goods Code or which meets the classification criteria of this Code. They are chemicals or
substances that can cause serious injury and severely damage property and/or the
environment. Therefore, they are classified according to their physical or chemical
effects on
people, property or the environment .
Often you will find chemicals that are classified as both a hazardous substance and as dangerous
goods. This information will be available from reading the Material Safety Data Sheet.
4.1 Hazard versus Risk
When discussing hazardous substances in the workplace it is important to understand the difference
between Hazard and Risk.
Hazard is a potential source of harm or injury that is associated with a
material. It is the potential for the material to cause injury, illness or disease. Risk is the likelihood
that a substance will cause illness when it is used. Simplistically it is the likelihood that a
substance’s associated hazard will occur.
Once people become aware of a hazard associated with a material, they are required to control the
risk in order to comply with the general provision to make a workplace safe.
4.2 Spillages
Before starting any operation in which spillages could occur, remove all other chemicals that could
cause consequential hazards. If chemicals are spilt on the body or clothing, Installers shall
immediately wash the part concerned with copious quantities of water and remove contaminated
clothing. Always remove contaminated clothing because the fabric maintains the skin chemical
contact for longer. Any spillage shall be cleaned up immediately to minimise the risk of further
accidents; and the clean up material disposed of appropriately according to the instructions in the
material’s Material Safety Data Sheet.
An issue that Installers should be aware of is the slippery nature of the adhesive substances that they
may use. The ADSOL ADHESIVE and the ADULETH Termiticide
adhesives will both be
slippery if spilt on the ground. This may lead to spillages or a secondary incident that has the
potential to be hazardous.
4.3 Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
The Material Safety Data Sheet is seen as a Primary Safety Information Resource with the aim of
providing consistent and relevant health and safety advice to personnel who could be exposed to
hazardous substances or dangerous goods when performing their routine duties.
A Material Safety Data Sheet is a document that is to inform the audience of the possible hazards
associated with the material, as well as providing information in respect to the safe storage,
handling and disposal of the material. It contains information on the potential health effects of
exposure as well as the first aid or initial response recommendations if an incident occurs. The
document also incorporates how to work safely with the material and how do deal with emergency
response scenarios, such as spills or fires.
You are provided with Material Safety Data Sheets for all three components that may be used in the
Protectant™ Termite Barrier System. If you do not have a copy of the MSDS for each of the
components you must ask for a copy to be forwarded to you.
5.0 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes items such as clothing, eye protection, respirators,
gloves and footwear.
Please note that due to the reliance on personnel for the correct use of PPE there is often the need
for more diligence and greater supervision to ensure that equipment is used appropriately. If people
are to use PPE they must be trained in its usage and the reasons as to why they will be using it.
