Housekeeping
Work areas will be maintained and left in a clean and tidy condition. All rubbish and off cuts will be
placed regularly in receptacles, neat piles or removed from site if required.
Public safety
Signage will be used to warn of work. Materials will be stored safely and secured where there is
the risk of injury. Materials will not be stored so as to clutter the work area, footpath or endanger
others. Where there is the potential for other trades, visitors, or members of the public to be
injured exclusion zones and/or barricades will be used.
Ladders
Ladders will be of an industrial standard and comply with Australian Standard 1892
– Portable
ladders. Ladders will be placed at about a 75 degree angle and extend at least 1 metre above the
area being accessed. Ladders will be placed on a good base and secured at the top and / or
bottom. Ladders will be regularly inspected, maintained and if defective will be rectified before use.
Work shall not be carried out from any ladder. They may only be used to accessed a working
platform.
Ultra Violet Exposure
The risk of injury from the effects of working in the sun will be minimised by the use of sunscreen,
sunhats, sunglasses and appropriate clothing as a minimum.
Equipment, Machinery and Tools
All equipment, machinery and tools will be adequately maintained and used in accordance with
manufacturers’ instructions. Guards will be fitted and working effectively at all times. The safety
instructions of drivers or licensed operators of plant will be followed. Common plant provided by
the principal contractor, will be used according to manufacturers instructions and any lawful
instructions by the principal contractor regarding the common plant. Any damage or defects with
common plant will be reported to the principal contractor.
Should the common plant be found to be defective or damaged, this equipment must not be used
regardless of any interruption to the building schedule. Such issues should be reported to your
manager or supervisor immediately.
Electrical
The White Ant Co will be advised of the proposed safe work procedures for any works in proximity
to live wiring or overhead power lines. Portable electrical equipment will be of an industrial
standard and will be inspected, tested and current. When used all electrical equipment will be
protected with residual current devices (RCDs). Electrical leads will be located away from water,
access areas and other areas where they can be damaged. Double adapters, 3 pin adapters
(piggy backs) and lightly constructed domestic appliances will not be used.
First Aid
A first aid kit which is adequate for the type of injuries that may occur performing works and that
meets statute requirements will be kept on site at
all times (or readily accessible in the contractor’s
vehicle only if located close to the worksite).
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment will be used where the risk of injury cannot be controlled by other
means. Safety helmets (complying with
Australian Standard AS1801
– Safety Helmets
) will be
worn where there is the risk of injury to the head (eg. When working under other trades). Suitable
gloves will be worn when handling hot or sharp materials or objects which could cause injury to the
hands. Protective footwear will be worn to control risk of injury to feet. Non slip footwear (eg.
Rubber soled volleys) will be worn when working on framing or roofs.
