10.4 Laser beam footprint (dot size)
The dot size depends on the laser power and a position of the objective (Fig.10.5)
To access to the objective remove the front or top panel of the enclosure. The objective (lens)
focuses the beam on the wire. Moving it up increases the dot size on the wire and reduces the
incident density of the laser radiation (Fluence). Fluence is measured in Joules per square
centimeter and defines the amount of energy applied to the unit of surface area during one laser
pulse. In most of the cases, fluences less than 0.5J/cm
2
will leave a poor or no mark on the wire
surface. On the other hand, fluences in excess of 2J/cm
2
may damage the wire.
The system comes with factory preset objective. Overtime, as laser ages its output and
therefore fluence decrease to the point when marking becomes not legible. Moving down the
objective shifts the beam focus closer to the wire surface. That makes the laser footprint on the
wire smaller, fluence increases and marking dots become darker. In order to keep the optimum
spacing between the dots both marking speed and line spacing may be reduced as described in
Subchapters 10.3 and 10.2.
