Procedure 2
Message Check
When the 400 series HDD does not function properly, some of the following error messages
may appear on the display. Start with Check 1 below and perform the other checks as in-
structed.
Check 1
If any of the following messages appear, perform Check 2. If the following mes-
sages do not appear, perform Check 4:
HDC ERROR
(After 5 seconds this message will disappear)
or
HDD #0 ERROR
(After 5 seconds this message will disappear)
or
HDD #1 ERROR
(After 5 seconds this message will disappear)
Check 2
If either of the following messages appears, perform Procedure 3. If the following
messages do not appear, perform Check 3.
Insert system disk in drive
Press any key when ready .....
or
Non-System disk or disk error
Replace and press any key
Check 3
Using the Toshiba MS-DOS system disk, install a system program on the hard disk
using the SYS command.
If the following message appears on the display, the system program has been
transferred to the HDD. Restart the 400 series. If the error message still appears,
perform Check 4.

Check 4
The HDD is connected to the system board directly. This connection can become
disconnected or damaged. Disassemble the 400 series as described in chapter 4,
Replacement Procedures
. If the HDD is not connected, connect it to the system
board and return to Procedure 1. If the HDD is firmly connected to the system
board, perform Procedure 3.
