Rear Brake Lever/
Parking Brake Adjustment
Check the rear brake for proper oper-
ation every time before riding. If nec-
essary, adjust the rear brake as
follows while engine is shut off.
1. The rear brake lever clearance as
measured at the lever holder
should be 3 – 5 mm (0.12 – 0.20
in) when the lever is squeezed. To
adjust the brake lever clearance,
turn the adjusting nut
2
. Turning
the adjusting nut clockwise will
decrease the brake lever clear-
ance.
2. After rear brake lever adjustment,
check that the rear wheels roll
freely with the brake disengaged
and the rear wheels off the
ground.
3. Set the parking brake by squeez-
ing the brake lever and pressing
the lock knob
1
.
4. Check that the rear wheels are
locked by trying to move the vehi-
cle back and forth.
5. Readjust the rear brake lever
adjusting nut
2
if the rear wheels
could not roll freely in step 2, or if
the rear wheels did not lock in
step 4.
WARNING
Failure to adjust the parking brake
can be hazardous.
If the brake grabs, or fails to lock
the wheels when engaged, you
may have an accident.
After adjusting the parking brake,
lift the rear wheels off the ground
and make sure they spin freely
with the brake released. Also
make sure the rear wheels are
locked when the parking brake is
set.
