Q. Does the ST9985V have any data encryption methodology?
A. There is no in-system methodology for encrypting data on disk. Please
stay tuned for forthcoming information on qualified encryption appliances.
Q. Can different data cache densities be intermixed on the ST9985V?
A. Different densities of data cache cannot be intermixed. This has
historically contradicted the maintenance manuals. HDS Santa Clara,
the sales and marketing arm of Hitachi Ltd Japan, has created this
policy to avoid the complexity and risk of this configuration scenario.
Q. What kind of mainframe emulations are supported? What about creation
of mainframe emulations on internal or external storage?
A. The primary mainframe emulation used is 3390. 3390 emulation may be
mapped to either internal or external storage. Use Cross OS File
exchange to format open data on external storage. The support for any
3380-n device emulation is for the Unisys or Fujitsu MSP Operating
Systems. No version of the IBM 3380-n emulation is supported on the
USP/NSC product outside of this restriction. Emulations are not
supported on a ST9985V when it is connected to an IBM Mainframe.
Most hardware and software vendors have dropped support for 3380
because they are too small and use UCB (unit Control Blocks) which are
a very limited resource in the z/OS operating system.
Q. The User Guide says that 3380 emulations are supported but you?re
saying that only the 3390 emulation is supported.
A. First, Sun does not support either Unisys or Fujitsu Mainframes.
Support of these specific vendors of mainframes are special case
situation which will be explained in another Q&A below.
The support has any 3380-n device emulation has historically been only
for the Unisys or Fujitsu MSP Operating Systems with the SE 9960 and
SE 9910. No version of the IBM 3380-n emulation is supported on the
SE 9970 and SE 9980. However, effective August 9, 2007, IBM 3380 mod-3
Track Compatibility is available via special order (a form called a
RPQ) is available for support with IBM mainframes and ST9990V, ST9990,
ST9985V and ST9985.
Q. Can components such as FED/BED/Data Cache/Shared Memory from a ST9990V
be placed in a ST9985V?
A. Components such as FED/BED/Data Cache/Shared Memory from a ST9990V
cannot be placed in a ST9985V?
Q. Can a customer use the ST9985V as a ?diskless? virtualization engine
for external heterogeneous storage?
A. Yes, the ST998V does support ?diskless? configurations for use as a
virtualization engine for external heterogeneous storage similar to
IBM SVC or EMC InVista
Q. Can the ST9985V be configured in any 19-inch rack?
A. No, the ST9985V supports only qualified 19-inch rack available under
the ST99xx price list.
Q. Does Sun support HDS VTL solutions?
A. No, Sun has its own family of VTL solutions.
Q. When will Dynamic Provisioning support external storage?
A. Today Dynamic Provisioning provides thin provisioning capability for
internal storage only, external storage support is planned for end of
