JOYSTICK PORT
The VIC 20 only has one joystick port, referred to as port 1. The joystick or controller
that uses that port is referred to as J1. If you decide to create a CJM file for any VIC
20 programs, make sure you set the primary port to be J1 within that file. Without
that setting specified, the joystick won’t work at all because you haven’t made port 1
available to the program.
If you don’t include joystick settings as part of any filename flags for a VIC 20
program, THEC64 will make port 1 available to the VIC 20 by default.
SCREEN SETTINGS
Some VIC 20 programs use the very top and/or bottom areas of the screen display,
which are not usually in full view when displayed by THEC64 using the default
settings.
If a running VIC 20 program looks like it is missing something at the bottom or top
of the screen, then use the special full height setting that squeezes the entire display
into the 720p image generated by THEC64. Add
FH
as a filename flag or add
fullheight
to the
X
entity in the relevant CJM file.
If a VIC 20 program appears in the top-left corner if the screen rather than in the
center, then chances are you are running a VIC 20 PAL but the program requires a
VIC 20 NTSC computer model, or vice versa. Change the model manually, or set some
appropriate customization and then run the program again.
Some VIC 20 programs also let you move the screen position by pressing the
CRSR
keys on the keyboard, with or without holding down the
SHIFT
key. Other programs
might use the joystick to achieve the same result. Perform these changes after loading
the program from a USB stick.
See
CHAPTER 8
for further details about filename flags and CJM files.
