Hydrostatic Drive
The drive unit, which consists of the hydrostatic transmission
and differential, is mounted to the main frame with the hydrostat
sticking up through the base. Very little maintenance is required
other than maintaining the oil level in the hydrostat, keeping
the outside cooling fins clean, maintaining belt tension, and
occasionally checking the pulley and controls for tightness.
Check oil levels
Check hydrostat oil level -
1. Clean the reservoir cap.
2. Remove the cap.
3. Check the oil level. The fluid level should be kept at the
“FULL COOL” mark.
4. Add the appropriate amount of oil needed. The hydrostat
is shipped with Mobil 1 synthetic engine oil, SAE 15W-
50. When adding oil, use this fluid or a comparable type.
Check differential oil level -
The differential is shipped filled with oil, and does not need
servicing or adjusting. It is bolted to the hydrostat but is
lubricated entirely independently. If it is ever necessary to
add oil (not likely), use the following steps:
1. Remove the indicated oil fill plug.
2. Bring the level of the oil to the top of the hole. Use only
80-90W gear oil.
Drive Belts
Belt Tension
Proper tension of the drive belt is .625” of deflection at
the center of the span between the pulleys with 6.4 lbs. of
force applied.
Hydrostatic belt adjustment
If power is lost to the drive wheels, it could be the result of
a stretched belt. If this should occur, adjust the belt idler
as necessary.
1. Loosen the idler bolt.
2. Slide the idler forward or backward as necessary. Proper
tension of the hydrostatic belt is .21” of deflection with
5 lbs. of force applied.
3. Retighten the idler bolt.
Pulley installation and Removal
Installation
1. Insert screws through the unthreaded holes in the hub,
and line up with the threaded holes in the sheave.
2. Start the bolts and position over the key and shaft while
the assembly is still loose.
3. Tighten all three bolts evenly (6 ft/lbs. recommended
torque).
Removal
1. Loosen and remove all three cap screws.
Maintenance
NOTICE
Before beginning to check or adjust the belt:
shutdown the machine, ensure that all moving
parts have come to a halt, remove the key from the
engine start weitch, place the key in safekeeping.
NOTICE
Over tightening of belts can result in excessive
belt wear and stress on clutch and flywheel shaft
bearings.
EXTREME CAUTION MUST BE USED TO AVOID
DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY. STAY CLEAR OF
BELTS AND CHAINS AND THE CUTTING WHEEL
WHEN THEY ARE MOVING.
NOTICE
To extend belt life proper tension must be
maintained. A loose belt will cause exessive cutting
wheel slippage and belt failure. A belt that is too
tight can cause bearing, shaft and belt failure.
NOTICE
Do not mix hydrostat and differential lubricants.
