3151 And 3151A User Manual
Maintenance and Performance Checks 5-18
Troubleshooting
The troubleshooting instructions contained in this section are
intended for qualified personnel having basic understanding of
analog and digital circuitry. The individual should also be
experienced at using typical test equipment as well as ordinary
troubleshooting procedures. The information presented here has
been written to assist in isolating a defective circuit or circuit section.
Isolation to a specific component is left to the technician.
Recommended Test
Equipment
Recommended test equipment for troubleshooting and adjustment of
the Model 3151/3151A are listed in the section entitled
Recommended Test Equipment in the beginning of this chapter.
Other equipment such as a logic analyzer, an in-circuit emulator, etc.,
could also be helpful in a difficult situation.
Power-Up Tests
Upon power-up, the Model 3151/3151A performs a set of tests. If the
instrument locks up after power on, proceed with the troubleshooting
procedure given in the following paragraphs.
Self-Test
An advanced feature of the Model 3151/3151A is its self-test
capability. This feature helps in reducing troubleshooting time of
faulty circuits to the minimum. If the instrument fails its self-test
procedure, it will generate an error bit. *TST? initiates the self-test
procedure. If the instrument executes its self-test without errors, 0 is
placed at the output queue. Non-zero indicates self-test failure.
The self-test procedure is intended to verify general operation of the
Model 3151/3151A. It does not test for accuracy. Therefore, it
should be used as an indication that the Model 3151/3151A
operates, in general. The self-test procedure checks about 95% of
the Model 3151/3151A hardware. If the self-test procedure fails to
respond correctly, troubleshooting the Model 3151/3151A is
suggested using the procedure given below.
The troubleshooting procedure should also be initiated whenever the
generator fails to perform either completely or partially. It is also
required to troubleshoot the Model 3151/3151A whenever the
instrument fails to fully comply with its published specifications. The
information given in the following does not intend to replace full scale
troubleshooting, but merely to direct the Service Technician to the
area were the source of the trouble is located.
