8. Decommissioning
The following time limits should be observed owing to the risk of fire and explosion:
8.1. After a fire
Caution: After a fire, the cabinets must not be opened until a period of at least 6
times the duration of the fire has elapsed. Depending on the duration of the fire, an
explosive steam-air mixture may have developed. Before opening the cabinet,
remove all possible sources of ignition within a radius of at least 10 m. Open the
doors extremely carefully. Use only non-sparking tools for this purpose.
Opening after a fire should only be done by the fire brigade or an authorised person.
Provide suitable extinguishing agents for the opening process and wear personal
protective equipment.
One indication of whether the waiting time before opening the cabinet must be
extended is the temperature of the cabinet surface. If it is still warm, do not open it
yet.
After a fire, the PROTECTO safety cabinet may no longer be used. In the event of a
fire, it can never be ruled out that the effects of heat may have damaged the fire
protection features and that the cabinet has lost its tested fire resistance time of 90
minutes.
8.2. Disposal
The cabinet can be sorted for recycling and need not be disposed of as hazardous
waste due to its use of harmless materials.
