Sometimes, along the way, you might encounter a query or reminder (we have no
error messages — only reminders). Follow the script closely and the performance will
go off without a hitch.
The Home Screen
The media adapter’s home screen appears automatically after the adapter finishes its
power-on self-test. You can return to this screen by pressing
Home
at almost any
time except when playback is under way.
(When audio content is being played back as background music, you can go to the
home screen, and do just about anything else, even go to the Setup and Help
screens. The background music won’t miss a beat. We’ll explain background music,
Setup
, and
Help
shortly.)
The only buttons that work when the home screen is shown are
Power
and
Home
.
The media adapter is talking to the server or servers and doing housekeeping, and it
doesn’t want to be interrupted.
Pressing
Power
once turns the media adapter off, except for the infrared
sensor circuit. Pressing
Power
a second time turns the media adapter back
on.
The media adapter also has a power switch on its back panel. This switch
turns the unit fully off and fully on. Use this switch for power-saving for
example if you are away on a long trip.
The media adapter goes through its full power-on self-test, which can take 20
to 30 seconds.
Power
works at all times, so we won’t mention it again when discussing which
buttons work in which situations.
The way
Home
works is easy to remember: going home while the performers
are on stage is not allowed. We’ll be discreet and avoid mentioning this again
(it should be unnecessary with such a high-calibre audience).
The Server Selection Screen
The home screen is automatically replaced in a few seconds by the server selection
screen. This screen shows the names of media servers that are “actively running” on
the network.
If a server is actively running and does not appear in the server selection screen,
press
Refresh
to make the media adapter search for servers.
The main purpose of the server selection screen is to let you specify which server
you want to retrieve content from, but there are many other things you can do when
this screen comes up.
To explain what you can do, we will list and explain — first very briefly, and then in
detail — the buttons that become operational when you go from the home screen to
the server selection screen.
