Install the rear hub, dome washer, and nut on each
side.
NOTE: Be sure the dome on the washer is facing
out, away from the rear hub.
5.
Torque the rear hub retaining nut to specification and
install a new cotter pin on each side.
6.
Install the rear wheels, wheel nuts and dust boots.
Torque the wheel nuts to specification.
7.
Lower the rear end of the vehicle and perform the
chain adjustment procedure (see Chapter 2
“Maintenance”).
8.
Be sure the rear axle housing fasteners are torqued
to specification.
Axle Removal
1.
Remove the axle housing fasteners (see “Axle
Housing Removal”).
NOTE: There is no need to remove the large axle
nuts retaining the RH axle housing if removing the
rear axle assembly from the swing arm.
2.
Remove the axle clamp bolts from each side and
remove the clamp brackets to allow for axle removal.
3.
Remove the rear fastener and front lower fastener
retaining the chain guard.
4.
Pull the chain tensioner back to allow enough slack in
the chain to remove it from the front drive sprocket.
5.
Rotate the RH axle housing to allow the axle assembly
to be removed.
6.
Carefully remove the axle assembly from the swing
arm.
Axle Installation
1.
Reverse the “Axle Removal” procedure.

Rear Hub Castle Nut:
40 ft-lbs (55 Nm)
= T
Wheel Nuts:
27 ft-lbs (37 Nm)
= T
Rear Axle Housing Bolts:
72 ft-lbs (98 Nm)
Washer
