Installing the Md4/PCI Board in a Digital UNIX Workstation
133
Issues with Digital Personal Workstations
The DOME device driver for the Md4/PCI board was
developed on the Digital 500au Personal Workstation.
This section describes issues encountered with that work-
station. These issues may not apply to all Digital Personal
Workstations.
The 500au workstation contains five PCI option slots:
• Three of these PCI slots are 32-bit PCI slots.
• Two are 64-bit PCI slots. The 64-bit slots are longer and
are located toward the bottom of the computer.
Limitations of the Digital UNIX 64-bit PCI slots
The Md4/PCI board is fully PCI compliant, but
the 64-bit PCI slots in the 500au are not. To use the
Md4/PCI board in any of the 64-bit slots, you must first
configure the slots to accept DOME PCI boards.
If you do not configure the 64-bit slot to accept the
Md4/PCI board, you must install the board in one of the
32-bit slots.
If you install your board in one of the 64-bit slots before
you configure the slot to accept it, a boot message similar to
this one will appear (the slot number may be different):
Illegal device detected on primary bus in
physical slot 4
Power down the system and remove the unsupported
device from slot 4
If you want to configure the 64-bit slots to support an
Md4/PCI board, see “To set the 64-bit slot to accept a
DOME PCI board” on page 125.
