1.2.4 Braking Control and Use
The
‘SPC10e’
is fitted with both service brakes and parking/
emergency brake systems.
However, the ‘
SPC10e’
hydrostatic
transmission will provide the
normal service braking functions otherwise provided with
conventional service brakes. The effects of slowing the machine
by moving the joystick towards the centre/neutral position will
slow the machine rapidly under full control and making use of
the available engine power without additional service braking.
The conventional braking need only be used in conditions where
extra braking effort is required over and above the engine
braking power. When operating down slopes particularly with a
truck attached, the transmission is already slowing and trying to
hold the speed from increasing. Use of the foot pedal provides
additional braking effort. Otherwise, only when the joystick has
already been returned to its
neutral
position, use the brakes to
bring the machine to a halt.
IMPORTANT
The hydrostatic transmission will drive AGAINST the
brakes, if they are applied when the joystick is
signalling forward or reverse movement. This will lead
to severe excess brake wear and overheating.
When the service brakes are fully applied they will
overcome the transmission and immediately override
the Joystick position putting the drive into NEUTRAL
and bring the machine to a halt. If the brakes are
again released with the Joystick other then in
NEUTRAL the machine will start to move immediately.
Service Braking - Front & Rear Brake Operation
The front & rear brakes are oil immersed multi-disc brakes
operated through a progressive petal control. There is a reserve
hydraulic supply to operate the brakes up to FIVE times in the
event of power failure so the machine can be brought to a safe
stop.
If the machine rolls whilst in neutral the foot brake may be used
to halt it. However, as soon as the Joystick is moved off
neutral
the foot brake should be released.
