Limitations on use

1. Adjustable work positioning lanyard

This product is personal protective equipment in accordance
with the 89/686/CEE PPE directive.
- This equipment functions as a connection between a work
positioning belt and an anchor point.
- Allows a person to be positioned (lanyard under tension) in
such a way as to prevent a fall.

2. Temporary horizontal lifeline

Portable anchoring device for setting up a fl exible horizontal
lifeline for a maximum of two people at an angle of no more
than 15°.

WARNING

Activities involving the use of this equipment
are inherently dangerous.
You are responsible for your own actions and
decisions.

Before using this equipment, you must:
- Read and understand all Instructions for use.
- Get specifi c training in its proper use.
- Become acquainted with its capabilities and limitations.
- Understand and accept the risks involved.

FAILURE TO HEED ANY OF THESE WARNINGS
MAY RESULT IN SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH.
ATTENTION: specifi c training for your
application is essential before use.

It is your responsibility to foresee situations requiring
rescue so that a rescue may be immediately carried out in
case of diffi culties encountered while using this equipment.
This implies an adequate training in the necessary rescue
techniques.

Nomenclature of Parts

(2b) Braking side of GRILLON rope, (3) Sliding protector,
(4) Adjustment device, (5) Moving cam + Release handle,

steel (cam).

Checking, points to verify

Before each use

Check the body of the device (cracks, marks, deformation,
wear, corrosion), the friction elements (cam groove), the
closing elements (screw and axle), the functioning of the
handle spring and the freedom of movement of the cam.
Verify there are no foreign objects (sand, pebble, etc.) in the
mechanism and no lubricant in the rope path. Check the rope
and the safety stitching. Look for cuts, wear and damage due
to use, to heat, and to contact with chemical products, etc. Be
particularly careful to check for cut threads.
Finish by performing a functional test.
Consult the details of the inspection procedure to be carried
out for each item of PPE on the Web at www.petzl.com/ppe
or on the PETZL PPE CD-ROM. Contact PETZL if there is any
doubt about the condition of the device.

During use

It is important to regularly inspect the condition of the
product and its connections with the other equipment in the
system. Always ensure that the various pieces of equipment
in the system are correctly positioned with respect to each
other.
Take care to keep foreign objects out of the adjustment
device.

Compatibility

Verify the compatibility of the GRILLON with the other
elements of the system (carabiner, harness, etc.).
WARNING, do not attach the adjustment device with a large
carabiner (e.g. WILLIAM) as the carabiner can block the cam.

How to use this equipment

1. WORK POSITIONING LANYARD -
CE 0197 EN 358

Installation on the harness

Be sure that the lanyard is correctly connected to one of the
EN 358 work positioning attachment points of the harness.

WARNING

- Do not use this equipment if there is a risk of a fall.
Maximum fall height: 0,5 m.
- The anchor point of the system must be located above
the user, and conform to the requirements of the EN 795
standard.
- The minimum breaking strength of the anchors must be
10 kN.
- Connectors must always be used with the gate closed
and locked. Systematically verify that the gate is locked by
pressing on it with your hand.
- Avoid rubbing against abrasive or sharp surfaces. Never put
the lanyard around structures with sharp edges.

Diagram 1A. Used as a double lanyard
on the two lateral attachment points

With the adjustment device attached to a lateral attachment
point, put the lanyard around the structure and clip the end of
the lanyard to the other lateral attachment point.
To tighten the lanyard, pull on the free rope. To loosen it,
press the cam with your hand without using the handle.

WARNING: It is dangerous to use the handle
without holding the braking side of the
GRILLON rope.

Diagram 1B. Used as a single lanyard
on the ventral attachment point

1. Before descending, remove all slack in the GRILLON rope
between the user and the anchor and grip the braking side of
the rope fi rmly with your brake hand.
2. Put your full weight onto the rope.
3. Only then, pull the handle to release the rope.
Control of the descent is accomplished by varying the grip of
the brake hand on the braking side of the rope.
You can vary the braking by pulling on the handle (handle
pulled completely back = minimum braking), but this method
cannot in any case replace the brake hand as the primary
means of braking.

2. TEMPORARY HORIZONTAL
LIFELINE - EN 795 Class C

The GRILLON is a temporary lifeline that must not be left in
place long-term as is a permanent lifeline made of cable.
ATTENTION, the proper installation of anchors requires skill
and must only be done by an expert trained in this practice.

Diagram 2A. Installation

The GRILLON temporary horizontal lifeline must be used in
conjunction with EN 795 anchors and EN 362 connectors
having a minimum breaking strength of 16 kN.
The lifeline is tensioned by hand by a single person. Do not
use a mechanical advantage system to tension the lifeline.
Do not knot the rope at the intermediate anchor points.
The maximum allowable distance between any two anchor
points is 5 m. Neatly arrange any unused rope.
Maximum slope = 15°.

Diagram 2B. Using the temporary
horizontal lifeline

- 1 person per span and a maximum of 2 persons on the
lifeline.
- The lifeline must not be used to suspend equipment.
- When the potential fall distance is greater than 1 m, you
must use an EN 355 energy absorber in conjunction with a
fall-arrest harness.

Clearance = amount of clear free fall space
between the anchor and an obstacle or the
ground.

The clearance below the user must be suffi cient to prevent
him from hitting an obstacle in case of a fall (see line H in
table).
1,2 m is added to your clearance calculations to account for
stretch of the lifeline.
