Glossary
Ad Hoc Mode
A wireless LAN communication method in which two computers with wireless LAN
conduct
data interactions without using an Access Point (see above).
Data interaction methods between two or more computers using an Access Point are referred
to as “Infrastructure Mode”.
Administrator
A user or account (see above) with the authority to use or administer all functions on the
computer or network.
ADSL
A type of broadband connection; a service that executes high-speed data communications
along standard analog telephone lines, using high frequencies not used by telephones. An
ADSL Modem is installed at both ends of the telephone line connecting the telephone
exchange station with the regular telephone. High-speed data communications are conducted
between these two modems.
AES
Certified by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 2001 as the U.S.
government’s next-generation standard encryption technology. When using AES with a
wireless LAN, you will require an access point that is compatible with AES. It does not offer
compatibility with WEP, but unlike TKIP, it is said to offer fast encryption and decryption
processing, with little effects on communication speed.
B
BIOS
– Basic Input/Output
System
A set of programs responsible for basic control of the computer. BIOS is activated
automatically when the computer is turned on, so the user may not be aware of BIOS and its
functions.
z
On this computer, operations are controlled by BIOS alone until Windows starts up. After
Windows starts up, BIOS and Windows work in harmony to control the computer’s
operations. Setup Utility (
) is a program that operates on BIOS.
