8 The Job Router
When printing several jobs on a same printer, it can occur that the printing is stopped due
to an error on the printer side: end of paper, network error, etc….
PRISMAspool then suspends the data transfer waiting that the printer will be again opera-
tional. All In an operator less enterprise, this could lead to the fact that the current job and
all following jobs are not printed, although these could be quite printed on possibly existing
other printers. PRISMAspool contains an additional function that allow to manage such sit-
uation and make possible to route automatically all waiting jobs to other defined printers.
This feature is as done by the Job Router component.
8.1 Description
Job Router is a service delivered within the PRISMAspool software. Install and configure it
correctly to make possible an automatic Job routing with printer stop. The Job Routing is
installed as Windows system service on the PRISMAspool computer and will supervise all
PRISMAspool printers.
Job Router function is configured in an ASCII file (JobRouter.cfg), which is in the same lo-
cation as the Job Router service. The configuration is read once the Job Router service is
started. The Job Router Service should be restarted each time the configuration file is
changed.
Only bi-directional printers (supporting PJL and configured as bi-directional in the PRIS-
MAspool server system) can be supervised.
8.2 How does the Job Router work?
Once started, Job Router connects itself to the local PRISMAspool Server. The Job Router
will get, from PRISMAspool server, all properties of configured printers and, with the PJL
language; the information on the availability of each printer. Particularly, PRISMAspool
knows whether PJL-Printer is ON-LINE or OFF-LINE and the time duration for each state.
Each state transition is also known.
The time duration in an "OFF-LINE" state is a key factor to decide whether all waiting jobs
could be scheduled on other available printers. Job Router checks some condition to route
a waiting job to another ON-LINE printer:
The selected printer must be in accessible (ON LINE)
