ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
M4-2. Check Brake Shoes for Wear –
Replacement Method 2 (with Air Brake
Assist)
See Figures 7-20 through 7-22.
Brake pads should be replaced when the pad is less
than 3/8” (.952cm) thick.
To
replace
brake
shoes
with
machine
air
assist:
1. Chock all of the wheels.
2. Turn the BATTERY DISCONNECT switch to the
ON position and turn the IGNITION switch to the
ON position.
3. Start the engine and charge the machine air
system completely.
4. Select WORK mode from the WORK/TRAVEL
switch (this will keep the airbags from inflating).
5. Select the SERVICE mode from the
SERVICE/DEADMAN switch.
6. Release the parking brake by pushing in the yellow
PARKING BRAKE button (on most models, some
may need to be pulled out).
7. Remove the brake canister release bolt (A) from
the side of the brake canister and screw the bolt
into the bottom of the canister to secure the spring
(bolt is inserted to provide a positive mechanical
release in addition to the air). Repeat for all brake
shoes that need replacing.
8. Turn IGNITION switch to the OFF position (this will
reset the parking brake button, but the canisters
will remain released because of the release bolt
inserted in the bottom of the canister).
9. Turn BATTERY DISCONNECT switch to the OFF
position. Secure a Lock Out/Tag Out tag to the
BATTERY DISCONNECT switch while following
your defined Lock Out/Tag Out procedures.
10. Remove the cotter pin on pin (B) and remove pin
(B) in brake lever and brake shoe bracket.
11. The brake shoe and bracket can now be removed
from the wheel.
12. Remove the brake shoe mounting bolt, replace
with a new brake shoe in the bracket and reinstall
the mounting bolt.
13. Install the new shoe and bracket assembly
underneath the brake lever and reinstall pin (B) in
the lever and brake bracket
,
and install a new
cotter pin on pin (B).
14. Adjust the brake position bolt (C) until there is a
3/16 inch clearance between the brake pad and the
wheel with the brake pedal off.

15. Remove the tag on the BATTERY DISCONNECT
switch while following your defined Lock Out/Tag
Out procedures.
