M4-1. Check Brake Shoes for Wear –
Replacement Method 1 (No Machine Air
Assist)
See Figures 7-16, 7-17, 7-18 and 7-19.
Brake pads should be replaced when the pad is less
than 3/8” (.952cm) thick.
To replace brake shoes with no machine air assist:
1. Verify the IGNITION switch is in OFF position and
turn BATTERY DISCONNECT switch to OFF
position. Secure a Lock Out/Tag Out tag to the
BATTERY DISCONNECT switch while following
your defined Lock Out/Tag Out procedures.
2. Chock all of the wheels.
3. Bleed the air system by pulling the two AIR DRAIN
cables (A) at the back of the machine and drain the
air reservoirs.
4. Remove the brake canister release bolt (B) from
the side of the brake canister and screw the bolt
into the bottom of the canister to release and
secure the spring. Repeat for all brake shoes that
need replacing.
5. Remove the cotter pin on pin (C) and remove pin
(C) in brake lever and brake shoe bracket.
6. The brake shoe and bracket can now be removed
from the wheel.
7. Remove the brake shoe mounting bolt, replace the
new brake shoe in the bracket and reinstall the
mounting bolt.
8. Install the new shoe and the bracket assembly
underneath the brake lever (D) and reinstall pin (C)
in the lever and brake bracket
, and install a new
cotter pin on pin (C).
9. Remove the brake canister release bolt from the
bottom of the canister and store (A). Repeat steps
7 through 10 for all brake shoes that need
replacing.
10. Adjust the brake position bolt (E) until there is 3/16
Inch (.48cm) clearance between the brake pad and
the wheel with brake pedal off.
11. Remove the tag on the BATTERY DISCONNECT
switch while following your defined Lock Out/Tag
Out procedures.
12. Machine is now ready for normal operation.
