3. Reagent preparation
Before using a reagent, procure and administer the safety data
sheet (SDS).
When using a reagent, wear protective equipment and carry out
ventilation sufficiently. Reagents to be used for the instrument
include acute toxic and corrosive substances.
3.1. Preparation required
The MA-3 is a highly sensitive mercury measurement instrument. Ensure high-grade
low-impurity reagents are ready for use when measuring very low concentration
samples. (For precision analysis, for measuring poisonous metals, etc.)
(1) (1+1) sulfuric acid (50mL)
Slowly add, while cooling, 25mL of sulfuric acid to 25mL of distilled/purified water and
dilute. Sulfuric acid generates heat when diluted so be careful when handling it.
Fully cool the bottle with water before using.
(2) 10% tin (II) chloride solution (50mL)
Dilute 5 g of tin (II) chloride with (1:20) sulfuric acid so that the total amount equals
50mL. Since 10% tin (II) chloride solution oxidizes a few days after being prepared
and its reduction ability therefore decreases, only prepare the amount required for a
day’s analysis.
(3) Mercury standard solution (1000ppm)
Ensure a mercury standard solution is ready for atomic absorption.
If pretreatment of samples is to be done in accordance with Japanese Industrial
Standard (JIS), refer to JIS K0102 (the measurement methods of liquid waste from
factory) for the required reagents.
*
Refer to each testing method for a pretreatment reagent and pretreatment
method.
