Connecting a Nimbra 300 Series switch series
element to the Network
Connect the optical connectors to the ports according to the following procedure.
See chapter Specifications in this manual regarding specification of connectors and
cables.
Pay attention to dust, even small dust particles can significantly lower performance
on the optical connection.
Note:
Avoid bending the optical cables too much. The minimum bend
radius is 35 mm. A smaller radius can cause inadequate signal
levels or damage the cables
Note the cable marking, to avoid swapping transmit and receive
cables.
Handle only one cable at a time. Leave the protecting cap on all
connectors until immediately before connecting the cable.
Clean the cable connector using a standard fiber connector-
cleaning tool.
1.
Remove the protective cap from one of the cables and the connector of the
port.
2.
Insert each cable carefully in the connectors of the port and make sure it gets
properly in place. Repeat the procedure for each port.
3.
When using Ethernet for supervision and maintainance of a Nimbra 300 series
switch, connect the Ethernet connector to an appropriate Ethernet port. See
chapter Specifications in this manual regarding connectors and cables for
Ethernet.
The serial interface is not intended to be permanently connected. It is only used for
initial configuration and software installation.
4.
Do not connect the power cords until the unit is ready to be started. See section
Powering up the Nimbra 300 series switch for more information.
5.
If required, connect a specific grounding cable to the chassis of the Nimbra 300
series switch, as previously described in section Chassis Ground Connection in
this chapter.
Powering Up a Nimbra 300 series switch
1.
Make sure that the power sources are disconnected.
2.
Connect both power cords.
Make sure to connect the DC power with the correct polarity!
3.
The unit will start booting.
In order to verify and monitor the start up sequence of the Nimbra 300 series
switch, a terminal can be connected to the serial port.
In operation, supervision and maintenance of a Nimbra 300 series switch is
normally done remotely over the network or via Ethernet.
For details on how to configure available services, see Nimbra Element Manager
Users Manual.
