Appendix A: Commonly Asked Questions
An “ON-LINE” debit transaction results in positive identification of
the consumer's DDA AT THE TIME OF THE TRANSACTION. The
consumer is identified by the use of a Personal Identification Number
(PIN) AND THE TRANSACTION IS PROVEN.
In all cases, the amount is deducted from a DDA. In the “off-line”
scenarios the monies are deducted one to three days later. In “on-line”
debit the monies are deducted instantly.
The term “debit” in this document refers to on-line debit.
In order for a merchant to accept debit, the following has to happen:
The terminal software is developed or modified to support debit.
A PINpad is attached for PIN entry.
A printer is required to generate a printed receipt.
Memory is required to store debit transactions. Since check and
cash transactions are typically not stored in the terminal today, and
debit primarily replaces checks and cash, more memory in the
terminal is required to store debit transactions.
What is a PIN?
A PIN is an electronic signature that identifies the cardholder. The
length of the PIN is variable and determined by the issuer of the debit
card but is usually between 4-12 digits in length.
What is a PIN Pad?
As the use of a PIN facilitates access to a DDA and proves a
transaction, the PIN entry process must be very secure. A PINpad is a
device that allows a cardholder to enter the PIN. Its primary function
is to provide a secure means of entering, encrypting and transferring
the PIN to the controlling device (e.g., POS transaction terminal),
which sends the encrypted PIN to the debit processor.
