Degassing Samples
Setting the Gas Flow Rate
1.
Make sure the degasser On/Off switch is in the On position.
2.
Open the SmartPrep program.
3.
Select SmartPrep, select the unit number, then select Show Status to dis-
play the Show Status dialog box.
4.
Turn on gas flow to the desired heating station using the associated
push button on the dialog box (refer to Show Status in
Chapter 3).
Do not place your fingers inside the heating stations; the stations may be
hot enough to cause burns.
5.
Turn the gas flow control knob above the heating station to obtain the de-
sired rate. To check the flow rate:

Use a precision flow meter, or
•
Insert the gas delivery tube into a beaker of water and observe the amount
of bubbles caused by the gas flow as you adjust the control knob.
Inserting Gas Delivery Tubes in Sample Tubes

Wipe the gas delivery tube with a clean cloth to remove any residue left
from the previous sample.
The end of the gas delivery tube may be hot enough to cause burns if it
was stored in a heating station. Wear cotton gloves and handle the gas de-
livery tube carefully to avoid burns.
2.
Remove the stopper from the sample tube and insert the gas delivery tube
into the sample tube.
Do not pierce the sample bed with the gas delivery tube. Doing so could
clog the gas delivery tube.
