Coolants
The coolant is a m ixture of w ater and
antifreeze. In production, the cooling
system is filled with an antifreeze-
w ater m ixture offering p ro te ctio n to
approx. - 3 0 ° C / - 2 2 ° F. The red
mark on the tem perature gauge in the
instrum ent cluster is m atched to this
antifreeze-water m ixture (approx.
boiling point 125° C /257° F). The
p rotection against corrosion is also
ensured by this m ixture making it
unnecessary to add a corrosion
inhibitor.
The coolant remains in the cooling
system all year long and m ust be
renewed after 3 years at the latest.
If coolant is lost, replace missing
quantity with w ater (potable w ater
quality) plus antifreeze of a recom ­
m ended brand.
For reasons of corrosion inhibition
the minimum p roportion of antifreeze
m ust be 34 % , w hich gives antifreeze
p rotection down to —20° C / —4° F.
If antifreeze is not available, add a
co rro sio n inhibitor to the cooling
w ater to ensure p roper p ro te ctio n
against corrosion. To tre a t the cooling
water, do not use more than 1 %
(10 cm3/l) of a recom m ended c o rro ­
sion inhibitor.
W ithout antifreeze in the cooling
system , the w ater already starts
boiling at approx. 118° C /224° F,
w hich means that the p o in te r of the
tem perature gauge in th e instrum ent
c lu ste r may still be below the red
mark.
Antifreeze
Y our vehicle contains a num ber of
aluminium parts. The use of alumin­
ium com ponents in m o to r vehicle
engines necessitates that antifreeze/
coolant used in such engines be
specifically form ulated to p ro te c t the
aluminium parts. (Failure to use such
antifreeze/coolant may result in a
significantly shortened service life.)
While there may be a num ber of
antifreeze/coolants available which
will provide the requisite protection,
all such products have not been
tested fo r MERCEDES-BENZ vehi­
cles. The following products, how ­
ever, are deemed suitable fo r use in
your car: MERCEDES-BENZ A nti-
Freeze and Summer Coolant.
Prior to the onset of the cold season,
check the coolant fo r sufficient
protection to prevent freezing. Re­
peat this check during the cold spell.
Regular testing of the antifreeze
concentration is carried out only at
each MERCEDES-BENZ maintenance
service.
