Fluid Level —
Autom atic Transmission
A t regular intervals, check the fluid
■ r
level of the autom atic transm ission
to g e th e r with the engine oil level prior
V
to every long trip.
Check transm ission fluid level with
the engine idling, parking brake
engaged and selector lever in posi
tion “ P” . The vehicle m ust be parked
on level ground. Prior to the check,
allow engine to idle fo r approx. 1 to 2
minutes.
Measure oil level w ith the d ip stick
com pletely inserted and the locking
lever released (1).
Painstaking cleanliness m ust be o b
served!
To w ipe the dipstick, use a clean,
lintfree cloth (preferably leather).
To fill the transm ission w ith fluid, only
pour it through a fine-m esh filte r into
the d ip stick opening. Even the slig h t
est im purity may cause operational
troubles.
The oil level in the transm ission is
dependent upon the oil tem perature.
The maximum and minim um oil level
m arks on the dipstick are applicable
references only if the transm ission
flu id has reached its normal operating
te m p e ra tu re of 80° C /176° F.
If, however, the transm ission fluid
c o o ls dow n to 20— 30° C/68— 86° F,
w h ich is the normal shop tem perature
range, then the maximum oil level will
be approxim ately 5 m m /0.2 in below
th e minim um mark on the dipstick.
W e stre ss this point because an oil
change is normally perform ed when
th e transm ission oil has cooled down
to shop tem perature.
The fluid level m ust not exceed the
d ip stick maximum mark w ith the fluid
at operating tem perature. Drain or
siphon o ff excess fluid, if required.
Then push d ip stick all the way in and
swing locking lever dow nw ards (2).
